mercedes star diagnostics as mentioned above is the best, but there are other ways too. you could use carsoft 7.4, which was selling on ebay for pretty cheap, but they were pirate versions which worked ok.
you could just use a obd2 scanner if you are in usa, all transmission codes start with p07xx.
